Vedic Astrology Vedic astrology is a form of astrology that is one of six disciplines of Vedanga. Vedanga is a discipline of Vedic religion. Vedic astrology depends largely upon sidereal or visible zodiac, which is different from the typical tropical zodiac that is used in the United States. It includes several sub-systems of prediction and interpretation that include unique sacralized elements that are not found in the United States. Vedic astrology is not simply horoscope astrology. There are three main branches of Vedic astrology: • Hora (Astrology): This is the branch that offers interpretation of the stars and the planets and how they affect life and events. Prasna is a method used in answering questions with an answer that is based solely on stellar positions. • Ganita (Astronomy): This branch is based upon mathematical calculations in addition to observations of the sky. The stellar observations at one time were done via different ancient techniques, but in modern times these observations are done via modern methods that are now available. • Samhita (Divination techniques): This branch does not involve interpreting the stars but other techniques that include numerology, characterology, omenology, palmistry, dream interpretation, plantarology, Indian Feng Shui, and phrenology. Yet despite some of the similarities, there are certain concepts within Vedic astrology that are not found within other schools of astrology. Such things are: • The lunar mansions, which is one of the 27 or 28 divisions within the sky. They are identified by the stars that are contained within them and the fact that the moon passes through the area during its cycle each month. • Graha involves the planets and actually means “heavenly body” and is believed to have a direct impact on human affairs.
