Spirituality
Spirituality is a term that we hear a lot. It doesn’t apply to one set religion nor does a person have to be hardcore religious. They can simply be “spiritual” because spirituality deals with the nature of humankind that has nothing to do with a human’s physical being, but an unworldly relationship that goes beyond time and their physical existence. Some claim to me spiritual but not religious while others claim to be spiritual and religious. Basically, spirituality feels like having a connection with a reality greater than the person themselves. It can be religious awe and reverence or an emotional experience. Spirituality can also be defined as being in a state of Nirvana.
But what is most important about spirituality is that it has a strong tie to psychological health in the way of sanity. It is through perceiving life as being important, complex, and on a sensual level. One may not feel like they are a complete human being unless they are a spiritual being. Spirituality gives their life meaning, helps them follow a set of values and beliefs, experience the awareness of a transcendent dimension that is beyond oneself but exists in life, experience reflection, and has a connection with oneself or with a divine power.
Yet sometimes when someone hears the term “spirituality,” the first thing that comes to their mind is Christianity, but there is definitely a difference in spirituality in religion and spirituality that is not a part of religion. Spirituality in religion defines a connection with their God or particular belief system. Their spirituality is more faith-based and in recent times this spirituality has become more open to more ideas than the more mature religions. Those who practice spirituality that is not due to religion tend to follow several spiritual paths. Rather than following the recommendations of others as to what path works, these people will seek their own path instead of conforming to the norm. What is the right path for one person may not be the best path for another.
Whatever the path may be, spirituality focuses on improving willpower and wisdom and achieving a better connection with their chosen Deity or the universe. Basically, spirituality is one’s internal growth and their work to change themselves and their relationship with the universe as a whole. What the spiritual does is change their physical reality that results in a change internally. This can tie in with one’s well-being and their holistic health. With the stressful work environments that we all seem to be in, some say that spirituality can be a way to overcome these difficult environments. By managing stress, one has a better quality of life, which makes it fair to say that practicing spirituality is a way to improve mental health, which has an influence on physical health, therefore improving the quality of life in all aspects.
But when beginning the study of spirituality, one more or less has to restructure various practices within their life and their view of some things within the world. Whether spirituality is practiced through religious means or non-religious means, certain things within our lifestyles do not tie in with a spiritual lifestyle, so things have to be given up. Chances are, to lead a spiritual lifestyle these things that must be thrown away are to be done so for good reason. They may be unhealthy for us, so it is in our best interest anyway to make sure that unhealthy things are not a part of our lives. If these unhealthy things are present, then they may disrupt our spiritual journey, which is something one does not want to do when achieving spirituality.
