When first coined, telekinesis was referred to as a phenomenon of moving objects caused by spirits, ghosts, or other supernatural forces. Later it was discovered that humans could also cause movement of objects – not of the fraudulent kind – but through the power of mind. This is when a new word – Psychokinesis (literally meaning ‘mind movement’) - was coined by Henry Holt in his book – On The Cosmic Relations – and taken up by Joseph Banks Rhine, an American parapsychologist, in 1934.
It was then decided to use the word ‘psychokinesis’ for the ability of humans to move objects with the power of the mind, to differentiate between the earlier meaning of telekinesis. Though parapsychologists prefer the use of psychokinesis, however, telekinesis is still used popularly, possibly due to the influence of movies and literature, which preferred this word to describe the paranormal phenomena of moving objects; possibly because of its resemblance to terms, such as telepathy, teleportation, etc.
Today, to describe a number of complex phenomena involving the use of complex mental force, the term psychokinesis is used, whereas telekinesis is used only to refer to movement of objects, howsoever small or large. Hypothetically, a person proficient in telekinesis may not be able to produce effects attributed to psychokinesis, such as softening metals to bend the objects, and by the same token, a person proficient in psychokinesis may not be able to move objects.
The Inherent Ability
It was thought that only a very few people had the ability of telekinesis, but many now believe that this ability is inherent in all humans. Though we all have a number of psychic abilities, we just do not use them, or train ourselves to use them. Just as people have interest in different things, such as art, sports, writing, and dancing, among others, and train themselves for them, we need to train ourselves to develop our inherent psychic abilities.
Just as an artist can learn math, so can you learn to use telekinesis. Just as you would say that you do not have the ability to learn dancing, similarly it is only your lack of belief in yourself that is holding you back from developing the ability of telekinesis.
If you wish to try telekinesis, you can; only do not expect to learn it overnight. It will take you years of dedicated practice, and it will be worth the wait. You need to relax and concentrate on an object. Start with something small. Try rolling a pen, or a toothpick. Try moving a feather in a bottle, try making the flame of a candle move to one side. Do things you find yourself comfortable with, and do it everyday.
Your progress will be slow. After all, you did not learn to write in a single day.
