Clairvoyant

A clairvoyant is someone who is able to gain information about a person, object, physical event or location through means that do not rely on the human senses. Clairvoyance literally translates to "clear vision" and is a form of extra-sensory perception. Not to be confused with someone who is telepathic, a clairvoyant gets information directly from a physical source and not from information transferred directly from one mind to another.

History of Clairvoyant Phenomena

There is evidence of clairvoyants that goes back thousands of years. Ancient shamans, priests and Hindu yogis all spoke of this clear seeing. Hindu texts speak of reaching this clear vision through certain types of meditation and discipline. There are also reports going back thousands of years where non-religious figures have had clairvoyant experiences such as the seeing of the a deceased relatives. The earliest record of more modern clairvoyance occurred in France in the 1700s. A young, mentally handicapped peasant could enter a trance and would be able to eloquently describe his disease as well as others that were suffering from other illnesses. He would wake up and have no recollection at all of his diagnoses.

In the 1800s clairvoyance was studied more. Scientists tried to quantify and diagnose clairvoyants and extrasensory perception. This research even continued into the 20th century with U.S. Government funded experiments regarding remote viewing, which is a way to see locations or objects that are not in sight of the viewer. It is believed today that telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance, etc. all come the same underlying mechanism in the mind.

Development of Clairvoyant Research

Some of the better known and successful research into clairvoyance came out of U.S. Army research from the 1940s to the 1970s. Most of these experiments were centered on remote viewing in the hopes that U.S. agents would be able to spy without having to be in harm's way. One of the largest experiments occurred at the Stanford Research Institute in 1972. The experiments were designed to test if a person could accurately describe the details of a certain location without having ever been there. The findings were published in several scientific journals and outlined the success these viewers and clairvoyants had.

The research was able to accurately show that remote viewing was possible and that clairvoyance was a true phenomenon. The subjects were given a location to describe and they were asked to sketch or verbally describe the location. Next, a panel of judges examined the actual physical location as well as the descriptions the viewer gave for comparisons. There were several successful viewings with this program. One viewer was able to accurately describe the crane at a Soviet nuclear facility. Another was able to describe a then unknown class of Soviet submarine to U.S. officials. This research was carried out in one way or another until the mid-1990s.
