Chinese Astrology Chinese astrology focuses on the interpretation of the future based upon the Chinese calendar. The Chinese calendar itself is based upon ancient Chinese philosophy and upon astronomy. Most importantly, it is based upon what is called the sexagenary cycle which runs for sixty years and documentation of the sexagenary cycle has existed since the Shang Dynasty. The sexagenary cycle consists of two cycles: the 12 earthly branches and the 10 heavenly stems. The 12 earthly branches refer to the 12-year cycle of animals that are called the Chinese zodiac and also operate on months that are based on the moon and on the hours of the day. The 10 heavenly stems are the five elements in the forms of yin and yang. The 60-year cycle is calculated based on the five elements (Earth, fire, metal wood, and water) of the heavenly stems and the 12 animals (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and boar) of the earthly branches. By multiplying the numbers 5 and 12, the result is 60. The cycle starts with wood and rat while it ends with water and boar. The cycle that we are in right now started in 1984. Below is an example of how the cycle runs and how each zodiac sign occurs in either yin or yang: • If the year ends in the number 0, then it is Yang Metal • If the year ends in the number 1, then it is Yin Metal • If the year ends in the number 2, then it is Yang Water • If the year ends in the number 3, then it is Yin Water • If the year ends in number 4, then it is Yang Wood • If the year ends in number 5, then it is Yin Wood. The two remaining elements are fire and earth, so you can more or less predict what comes next in the cycle. However, the date in which the cycle switches is not according to the Gregorian calendar. It is entirely dependent upon the Chinese New Year. According to the Gregorian calendar, the Chinese New Year falls anywhere between January 21 and February 20, so if you were born in January or February, your element will still be that of the previous year. Now you know that your Yin and Yang are broken down into five elements in addition to the cycle of 12 animals. Each of the animals is governed by a Yin and Yang direction as well as an element. What results is that a person’s overall make-up has a Yin and Yang balance along with the five elements and has a major bearing on what is effective for that person and what is beneficial to them when it comes to feng shui. If you’re not familiar with what feng shui is, the layman term has to do with the arrangement of your surroundings and how they affect your well-being. The Chinese will say that it is called geomancy. A particular direction or season may appeal to you more because of your element since each life force is different. When doing further study on Chinese astrology you will find that there is much more to be had. You have meanings for all 12 of the zodiac animals in which the animals are divided up into four trines. There are solar terms for the 24 two week segments of the Chinese agricultural calendar. There is a lot of information inside of the concepts of Chinese astrology that are not only interesting but beneficial if you are eager to learn them.
